What is a Student Council?

A Student Council is a representative structure through which students in a post-primary school can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management and staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students. (Department of Education and Science, 2002)

Why do we have a Student Council?

Without our students we would not be an educational facility, our students make a valuable contribution to our school. The Student Council provides an opportunity for our students to engage with teachers, parents and school managers in the operation of our school. The student Council creates a sense of ownership of the school and its activities among the student population. Students can take responsibility for projects, and can demonstrate that they can manage and bring projects to successful conclusion. This year (2024-2025) students are focusing on the return of plastic bottles (deposit return scheme) which would otherwise end up being discarded.

Election of the Student Council

Each year a number of candidates for Head Boy and Head girl are nominated by staff members at the end of their 5th year.  Following an election process the students are appointed to the role at the beginning of 6th year. The Head Boy and Head Girl are role models to the student body and represent the school at various events including Open Night, the annual school musical and are responsible for sharing student ideas with school management.  They are representatives and ambassadors of the school, who ensure the views of the student body on all matters are heard by school management.  This includes but is not limited to Teaching and Learning, extra-curricular activities and our role in supporting the environment.

They are also supported by a team of leaving certificate Prefects, who following an application process are selected to the role of Prefect.  Like the Head boy and Head girl they are leaders of the student population and are a support to all students.
